Still running good

The past 10 days have been very good. I'm obviously running good but also playing and (important) table selecting good at the NL1000 tables.

I also had a nice discussion with Kaby (oo_kaby on Everest) on pokernews about my w$wsf percentage (which is around 42-43 usually). He pointed me on the fact that a w$wsf this low (he thinks 45+ is optimal) is a decent leak.
I'm aware of the fact that it could be higher with me and that I might miss a few +EV spots now and then, but I'm still not sure it's that easy to tell.
For instance, my Went to SD and Won $ At SD are pretty high (28 and 53 respectively).

Usually people with higher w$wsf percentages have lower Won at SD percentages (between 48-50). And one important thing that they might miss, is that pots at showdown are usually bigger then pots that don't go to showdown.
Offcourse it's very difficult to say what's optimal here, but having a w$wsf too high could mean that you don't give villian's the opportunity to bluff enough.

I would like to hear some other opinions (especially from Everest players NL400+) on this discussion. For those who missed the discussion....this is the link: http://nl.pokernews.com/poker-forum/topic46313/

Still runnig good (400/600/1000):

For all the PokerEV-lovers, here a game analysis graph for January. It's easy to see my downswing (red-line way above blue) and the following upswing.

Best weekend ever

After a terrible week, I decided to play some during the weekend, especially during the night. It worked out pretty well and if games are always like this I might do it more. Just finished my first session of the day and I probably had the sickest run of cards in a long time. I won about 8 buy-ins in less then an hour.
Got aces 5 times and always there was action, no bad beats (maybe one) and so on.
Anyhow it's nice to recover from my biggest downswing in just 3 days.

Below a nice overview of the difference between running bad (5 weekdays) and running good (last 3 days).

Worst week ever.

This week was by far my worst poker week ever, results wise.
I lost every single day, which is probaly also a record (losing 5 days in a row).
In total I lost 15 buy-ins (mostly on NL600). I also managed to lose money with QQ/KK/AA and AKs.....quite an accomplishment I would say.
The fun thing was that I lost most of my money to terrible players.

Hands like the one below are a good example. Villian is a terrible (but passive!!! player). I'm perfectly happy with how I played the hand, but I should fold to his river raise.

Stats freak

I'm probably a bit of a stats freak, but as a poker player thats probably a good thing. Once in a while I look into my PT database and try to look at all my stats over a big sample. Which hands are losing, how do specific hands do it from the blinds? By looking at this I can see if I'm overplaying some hands, or maybe opening to much hands.
My last database currently consist of 141K hands (almost 3 months). I think it's still not enough, but it gives some idea of hands that are winning/losing.

Some facts from this database:

Pocket pairs:
- Winning with all of them (AA 5,85 BB/hand)/KK/TT/QQ/JJ most profitable in that order)
- Most dealt (EV=~642 times) JJ -> 698 times
- Less dealt AA -> 565 times (as you can see there is still a huge difference here)

Suited connectors:
- Winning all playable hands 65s+ (AKs, KQs, JTs, 98s most profitable)
- Most dealt 54s(EV=~427 times) -> 441 times
- Less dealt KQs -> 398 times

Broadway hands not suited (JT+):
- Only losing with QTo (-0,01 BB hand), so not really losing, because it's better then nog playing the hand at all.
- Most profitable are AKo (1,22 BB/hand), AQo and AJo
- Most dealt (EV=~1298) KTo -> 1,373 times
- Less dealt KQo -> 1,251

Broadway hands suited:
- Losing with AJs (-0,08 BB/hand) and ATs (-0,11 BB/hand)
- Most profitable AKs (1,90 BB/hand), AQs and KJs
- Most dealt ATs -> 450 times
- Less dealt AQs -> 391 times

Suited aces:
- Losing with AJs,ATs and A7s (-0,18 BB/hand)

All hands:

When you look at how much you win/lose with hands it's not necesseraly bad when losing with a hand. Because when not playing the hand at all, you also lose a certain amount. For example 72o lost 0,15 BB per hand. So basically when I lose more then that I'm playing that hand unprofitabla for sure.

So which hands them I'm playing regularly (> 25% VPIP) are losing more then 0,15 BB/Hand....

K7s -0,16 BB/hand -> VPIP 25%
A7s -0,18 BB/hand -> VPIP 74%
J8s -0,18 BB/hand -> VPIP 35%
K8s -0,28 BB/hand -> VPIP 27%
86s -0,29 BB/hand -> VPIP 45%
J9s -0,38 BB/hand -> VPIP 57%
64s -0,39 BB/hand -> VPIP 35%
97s -0,48 BB/hand -> VPIP 69%

So as a conclusion I can say that I'm probably overplaying 97s (my favorite hand lol) and J9s a litte bit too much. But overall I'm pretty happy with those stats, as there are no real big losers.

This month:
Already played 20K hands which is good and I'm playing really well and I'm up almost $0,60 cent a hand and I'm aiming for $0,40 - $0,50 this year so running above expectation so far.

Ace high baby

Hands like the one showed below always feel nice, but especially when it's the very first hand at the table. So I didn't know the player and could only use my pattern mapper and timing tells (instant pot bet the river for example).
Offcourse this board texture is probably the best possible to make a call like this and as I have the Ace of hearts its very unlikely he has a bigger ace.

Thinking about your game

To improve as a poker player it's important to look critical your game from time to time.
It helps to read articles and watch video's from other players, who may have an other view on certain situations.
When playing as much as I do, I notice that I'm sometimes playing as a machine. The positive side of this is that I never tilt, but the downside is that I play some hands/situations the same too often.

A few days ago a read an article on 2+2 (could not find it back), but one thing in this article was about 'upfront' and 'backdoor' agression. It really opened my eyes a little, because a lot of the good players (including me) know how to use upfront agression (continuation betting, double barrel, triple barrel and so on), but using backdoor agression in a good way is a lot more difficult, but makes you so much tougher to play against.

Backdoor agression is about check-raising flops/turn/river when you are the pre-flop agressor. It's also about leading into the raiser (AKA donk betting). I think when your capable of balancing this agression into your game with strong/mediocre and (semi)- bluff hands it really makes you a bigger winner in most games and also a lot tougher to play against.

Triple barrel gone wrong

Finally I like to show a triple barrel that went wrong in a HU game against a pretty good player (his stats were 49/40/3 or something like that) and he views me as a good, but tight player (my HU stats are 38/34/3).

This hand made me think about 3-barreling ranges. On the river I'm about 100% sure that his best possible hand on this board is QT (AT would have been re-raised pre-flop and 2-pair+ would have bet the river/turn).
On the other hand he knows that the king on the turn is a perfect second barrel card for me and when I bet the river he probably knows I have 2pair+ or nothing here, because a lot of the time a hand like AK would check behind on turn or river.

I'm not sure if I like his call here so much, because I could be bluffing with better hands here, but it made me think of why it's so important to value bet thin against players like this. It not only makes you tougher to play, but it also makes your range a lot wider then just top2 or nothing when betting 3 streets.

Final 2007 update

First of all, sorry for the lack of updates recently, but I hope to compensate it with this somewhat longer then normal update.
I was kind of poker tired, so I just spend my poker time into effective playing hours.

2007
In 2007 I managed to put in 1314 poker hours, which is about 110 hours a month. I know it doesnt sound much (normal job here is about 168 hours a month), but I found out that it's not good for my game and health to play 8 hours every day.

So looking back at my goals in the beginning of the year I did not manage to play 1 million hands (my guess is around 750K hands), but I managed to reach my earned money goal with a very wide margin (goal was $120,000).

The best thing about this year was that my monthly income was very stable, better then I ever would have expected. All my months were $12K+ and my worst month was exactly half of my best month....so do some calculations and you know the 2007 results. I know people would like to see a year graph, but I have 5 PT databases so making one graph would cost me some photoshop time and it's probably a very boring (but nice) upwards sloping line.

2008

I would love to put some goals here for 2008, but I'll have to say that I'm not exactly sure what they will be. I don't know if I'm capable of putting another 100 hours a month of grinding NL400/NL600/NL1000. I'm now at a point were I could take the step from medium stakes to the higer stakes (NL1000+), but it's not just a small change in games. I should change my schedule for example, or play on different sites.
I know a lot of players get a kick from competing with the best and are action junkies, but I'm different in that.
Offcourse I like to play with good/better players some of the time, because it makes the game so much more interesting, but I'm not really an 'ego' player who always wants be the best and outplay others.

This was it for now, hope to update my blog more recently in the new year.
Finally I want to thank everybody for reading and wish everyone a happy new year.

Playing a flushdraw againt a donk.....

Swingy start of the month

December has started kind of swingy. Had one session where I lost over 7 buy-ins in less then 2 hours. During this period I didn't win one single pot bigger then 75BB and lost money with all my big pairs.... Im still up over $5K so not much to worry.
Don't have time for to analyse hands, so I'm just posting some fun ones.

Monthly salary in 5 minutes....

....thanks to some donk on tilt....
Just finished a nice session with 2 NL1000 tables. On both tables 2 incredible donks were sitting, who probably had been quite lucky, cause one of them build his stack up to $5K. But as usual when this happens, the table fills up with regulars.
So we were sitting with 4 tough players, 1 shortstack and the donk (70/13/2). Luckily I had position on all regulars and had the donk to my left.

The hands below are his last 3 pots, which took place in less then 5 minutes....
Obviously AQs in the last hand is the nuts at that moment with a donk on complete tilt.

Results + I'm a nit part 2

First the the results of the previous hand.
One of the reasons I folded was because of the player left after me, but after thinking it through he probably never checks turn and river with a better hand then mine. As far as raminator goes I put him on JJ/QQ or a missed draw and as he's not that agressive normally, folding isn't that bad.

This is a hand I played today. Somehow I had a feeling after his check on the flop (timing of his check) that he hit this flop hard. Normally I would never fold here against a player like him, but somehow I almost folded without much thought and showed my aces and he was kind enough to show his set of sevens...

November update

I havent been playing so much this month (about 43K hands so far), but the results are a little bit above average. Even though my MT-ratio dropped below 6 (had it around 7 for a while), my hourly rate increased to about $175 the last 3 months. So I'm happy with that.
On to an interesting hand, I'm curious if people would call here on the river...

I'm a nit...

In the hand below I almost folded the flop with top 2. But I decided to call and see a turn (I had 4 outs at least...). It also clearly shows why it's wrong to play like he does. His range is so small here, that it's very easy to put him on 22.
For example if he raises pre-flop and I decide to call here in the BB with AJo (which is not a very good play, by the way) I'm probably stacking off here like 90% of the time.
So I folded the turn and showed and from his chat afterwards, I think I was right here, although you never can be sure offcourse.

Strange HU hand

This hand I played against a very agressive and crazy swede.
He's not a donk, but takes some very weird lines all the time and is capable of big bluffs and calls. He also likes to take down every (big) pot, especially HU.
For example, he will always bluff the river when he has no showdown value.

EverestPoker Game #2372955075: Table Nassau-6 - $3.00/$6.00 - No Limit Hold'em - 23:54:49 - 2007/11/15

He is very agressive pre-flop (close to 55/46/3 or something, HU offcourse), so folding KJo with position is not really an option. He re-raises worse kings/jacks here.

*** FLOP *** [4d 5c Jc]
Cheeseman87 checks
BldZwtTrn checks

His check on this flop suprised me a little, because he likes to c-bet a lot of flops. I've seen him do this before with a mediocre hand, so I'm checking behind, he bets a draw/strong hand/air almost always here.

*** TURN *** [4d 5c Jc] [9c]
Cheeseman87 bets $90.00
BldZwtTrn calls $90.00

Im not sure if I played this turn correct here. Because raising is a good option as well here, especially since he is capable of calling a raise with worse then my hand.

Cheeseman87 bets $145.00
BldZwtTrn raises to $511.90 and is all-in

It didn't suprise me that he was betting this river. But it looked like a bluff or value bet with an ace to me, so I decided to push him off his one pair hand.
I was pretty sure he didn't have a flush/trips, but something like AT at best.

*** SHOW DOWN ***
BldZwtTrn shows [Ks Jh]
Cheeseman87 shows [Tc Ts]

Offcourse I was kind of suprised by his call here, but in retrospect, he probably thinks/knows that I never have a flush/trips here and that I'm probaly calling with my TP/2pair hands and not turn them into a bluff on the river, so then it must be a bluff to him (KcQx for example).

FPS-machines

Lately there a lot more players who try to play a more LAGgy style instead of the standard 20/17/3 TAG style. Some can do this profitable, but most are just not good enough and would make a lot more just by playing kind of straight forward.
But I love those FPS machines with stats of 29/28/6 who try to outplay you every hand and call down way to light.

One example is the player in the hands below, his stats are close to 31/30/6 and he is a player who doesn't want to give up easily and calls down way too light.

Doesn't want a split pot here...

Monsterdraw 200BB+ deep

This a hand against a player with which I played the most hands the last few months. We've played somewhere around 15K hands against each other in 2 months.
When making a bluff it's very important to know your opponent (and that your opponent knows you!) and take a line that you would take with strong hands as well.
The hand below is a good example:

This is offcourse a monster flop for me. And I'm happy to get in on this flop. I decide to bet out. Check-raising is an option here as well, but I don't think he is stacking off here for 200BB with an overpair, so I think there is more value in betting then CRing.

JopieMan calls $40.00

He just calls, so I'm pretty sure he has a one pair hand, most likely 88-AA. With AA/KK a little bit more unlikely cause he would raise them a lot of the time.

Overagressive HU donkey

Today I played a HU game on NL600 against a complete donkey (74/61/3), but an agressive one.
He raised every hand on the button and almost never folded to re-raises. This is offcourse very expoitable, but when you're complety card dead and never get big hands pre-flop it can be very frustrating to play against. We played for about an hour and I won about $1000 off him, but it was a rollercoaster ride to get it.

HU hand

Posting one hand from a nice HU session yesterday. I was playing a regular who's is pretty bad and thinks I'm a donk (which is always nice). He's the guy who takes a HU session as a personal fight and I always love those games, cause it's very easy to get them on tilt just by saying some things in the chat.

Played him for about an hour on 2 tables and won a little more then 5 buy-ins off him. During this hand he still was playing kind of normal (never ever folding for re-raises pre-flop).
