200k hands

Still on schedule for 1 million hands and 5bb/100+ so far.
Also quite happy that this year has been quite steady so far. Had some swingy days but nothing compared to last year. Last days I even had my luckbox back!

Tourneys are still terrible BTW. I might have set the record for longest streak of out of the money finishes. I think I'm now around 30-40 sunday majors on a row out of the money. I probably just suck at tourney poker though.
Maybe I just save my luck for the WSOP, because I'm gonna be playing 2-3 tournaments in the first 2 weeks of june there. Hope to get lucky one time!

Coolers....

Just finished a very sick session, played almost 6k hands and don't think I got coolered as much as I did today.
Just to show you how ugly variance can be....

Variance

Variance is something I talked a lot about in my blog.
It's because it's so important to be aware of in poker and I believe that most players underestimate it tremendously.
Even some of the top players do so, for example Brian Townsend in his blog on cardrunners.

I've never played him, but from what I've heard and seen he's a good player, but when you're playing the biggest games on the internet and also mostly Omaha (which has a lot higher variance then holdem) you should be expect some massive swings.
And when I'm talking about massive I don't mean absolute $$, but just buyins and periods of hands when you're losing or playing break even.
If you see that on those stakes, most players probably don't play more then 10k - 20k hands a month, it's really easy to have a losing year.

If I look at myself I've had a period of 250k hands where I didn't win and I can say that I probably have a greater edge then any player in a nosebleed game where expected winrates are probably 3bb/100 at best. My play is also not that high variance (my stdev is around 75-80 bb/100) compared to well over 100 for Omaha I guess.

So if you take those things together (100+ st dev, 3bb expected winrate, 20k hands a month) then at the end of the year out of the 10 highstakes players who expect to win 3bb/100, 1 is losing money over this 250k hands....
The thing is that probably no player can't stand losing that long (timewise) so they move down. In the end it probably just means that the most lucky/brave/rich players will keep playing nosebleeds.

And players like Brian Townsend should just be very happy with himself that they runned so hot when taking their first shots, because without that it's probably impossible to play that stakes for longer then a month.

Ok so that's it for now. Need to post some hands again, that's a lot easier :-)
Ok just one then...really wanted to fold after he 17th bet me, but hey, I have AK!

2010 so far

The results so far this year are quite good.
I played 175k hands this year and I'm still winning over 6bb/100.

Lately there has been some discussion on 2+2 on some softplaying/colluding of 'team Sweden'. I heard they got banned and thinks it's a good thing, especially if u read the comments on 2+2 from 'team Sweden'.

Link to 2+2 topic:
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/56/medium-stakes-pl-nl/official-everest-msnl-thread-272684/index35.html

But now they start accusing the dutch players of softplaying as well and since I'm dutch I don't like this at all. Yes it's true that there are a lot of dutch players on EVP and most of time are above average players and play a lot with each other, but Ive never seen suspicious plays between dutch guys. Or like the swedes, players who just don't play a big pot against each other ever.
I just have respect for good players (no matter where they from), but I play against a dutch player just like I would play against a swedish player.

Top 10

I've got some funny reactions on this top10 I posted last month. Quite funny that people actually really believed that NICORINSOU is the best midstakes player on EVP.
There is only 1 guy who believes that and that is Nico himself...just read the comments by that post from him and you'll understand me :-)

First 100k hands of 2010

Just played my first 100k hands of 2010 and I'm quite happy with the results, especially since im not even running hot (EV wise).

Here's my graph over this 100k hands:

Im also playing some Rushpoker on Full Tilt and I really like it so far. Because of it's structure stacks are really deep (average is 200b after 1 hour of playing) and there are just no shortstacks at all.
Because youre constantly changing tables there's no such thing as table dynamic, so just basic handreading becomes very important and I think I have a big advantage there, because I played so much hands and just have a better feeling then most players where I am in a hand.

I might post some interesting hands in my next update.

Top10 Midstakes players on EVP

I decided to come up with something new.
As most people always like lists I decided to start with a monthly top 10 of best midstakes players on EVP (NL400 and NL600)
This list will be picked out of the players who I've played at least 5000 hands over the past 3 months with and I will make a new update with a new top10 at the beginning of every month.
Criteria for the list are basically 3 things, first pre-flop play, second postflop play and probably most importantly tilt control.

Offcourse this list is very subjective, cause its just from my experience vs the players.
Some players, who for example are very lucky against me are probably higer in the list then players who run very bad against me, cause it may look like someone is running over me, but he might just run superhot against me or the other way around offcourse.

Ok so here it is, starting with number 10.

10. pocketjoe (played 19k hands with him)

Very solid player, but not a problem to have on your left. On the tight side preflop and kind of ABC postflop. Never seen him tilt though.

9. fjutsie (21k hands)

Same story as pocketjoe although he is a little more agressive postflop.
I might be biased here a little bit as it seems Im running quite hot vs him and he is down quite a bit in my database, so he might just be running very bad at my tables.

8. lolpancake (24k hands)

This is a guy who always looks for spots to outplay u postflop. Sometimes he overdoes it a little, but it makes him more difficult to play then some of the guys who just try to stay out of the way. Pre-flop he's quite standard likte the rest. His downside is probably that he lets his emotions take over some of the time.

7. h00l1gan (16k hands)

This is a relatively new player (playing since december I think), but so far he seems quite a good player, really like his positional preflop play. Postflop he's one of the more agressive players, but mostly in a smart way. Havent seen him make any tilt plays either.

6. JVVD (12k hands)

This is a regular with the highest VPIP in the top10 (~ 30%). A guy u rather dont have on your left. Really agressive preflop (especially on the button), although I think he's too loose in EP, he seems to get away with it against most players.
Postflop he's not that agressive though. Not sure if he can handle tilt.

5. Jflamm (28k hands)

Played the most hands vs him. He's just like jvvd a pain in the ass to have on your left. Really likes to 3bet the button. Postflop he can really be overagressive sometimes. It's really important vs him to mix up your game and trap him in spots where your hand seems face up. He could tilt quite a bit though.

4. Niwle (12k hands)

Very solid player pre-flop and postflop. He's not that irritating to have on your table like number 5 & 6, but I just don't see him make much big mistakes. Just very solid and agressive when he has to.

3. Ekzism126 (11k hands)

Very good handreader postflop. Good and very solid pre-flop and capable of some creative moves postflop. Never seems to tilt.

2. Hotze (20k hands)

I like his style a lot. Plays a very good positional game pre-flop and is very agressive postflop, but in a good way and not just in the standard spots. Always seems to put me in a though position. I might be biased here again a little as he could be running hot vs me, but his stats suggest at least he knows very well what he's doing.

1. NICORSINOU (19k hands)

Without a doubt the best player on the midstakes on EVP. No clue why he still does play some NL200 and not NL1000+. Seems like he always knows exactly what u have and never makes any mistake. Tilting is something he never does, when he gets a bad beat, he doesn't blink and goes on to the next hand.

Ok so this was my first top10, next month another one. Just let me know if u miss some players in here or if some players don't belong in here.

Back from holiday

After a week of holiday in Austria Im back to playing some poker again.
So far 2010 is going as ok for me. Played 70k hands so far and won close to 7bb/100.
My goal for this year is to play 1 million hands and keep my winrate above 5bb/100.
I know it's difficult to set winrate goals, cause im still dependant of the variance that could treat me bad, but with such a big sample it should be evened out at the end for the most part.

I'll keep this update short, but Id like some input on some topics I can talk about next time. It can be about strategy or anything poker related. Just let me know in the comments and I'll pick an interesting one to talk about next time.

Some hands to finish this update:

Happy new year

Im so lazy when it comes to blogging.
Everytime I tell me self I should update more frequently, but somehow im just too lazy for it. While with poker im not lazy at all and probably played close to 1 millions hands in 2009.

It was my 'worst' year as pokerpro so far (3rd year now), but I still made a nice profit, but just not what I expected it to be.
It is always difficult to tell why it wasn't so good, but a few reasons are that the tables where pretty bad between march and june and I run pretty terrible as well during that period and probably my game was affected by that.
I also had some computer issues as well. But after holidays in August I recovered quite well. Replaced my harddisk which was broken and bought a 30 inch monitor(played with 2 24 inch before).

Suddenly everything was going smooth again, tables were great, I was running good and made over 100 buyins in 100k hands.
I also played my first live tournament ever (yes I'm a tourney donkey) on Gran Canaria (SPT final). It was a complete failure as I become 60th (out of 97).
I'm just not suited for playing 20 hands an hour, I even could go to the toilet with good timing between 2 hands without missing a hand....

Although pokerwise it sucked, it was very nice to meet a lot of guys I'm playing everyday, so I might visit some other tournaments as well this year, not sure if Im playing though.

Last thing, I found out Twitter (yeah finally) and think it's an easier way to post short updates on poker and other things in life, so guess Im gonna use that (my username is Bldzwttrn, as my screenname on EVP)
It also works really nice on my new Blackberry 9700 with Ubertwitter.
So if you want to add me, please do so.

It's been a while

Its been 3 months since my last update.
I had a very tough stretch of hands between april and july, where I didn't win anything for about 250k hands. I've never had anything like that before, so obviously it really hurt my confidence in my game.
It was clear that I was running very bad in a lot of ways, but still 250k hands seems amazing and I never thought it was possible.

In august I went on holiday and when I came back in September I replaced my harddisk (which was broken during the time I moved in with my girlfriend) and after that I could start grinding again.
EVP had some nice promotions in September (alpine cash race and a hand race), so my plan was to play over 100k hands to qualify myself for this alpine package in this hotel:

At the end of september I played around 120k hands and qualified myself easily.
Lucky for me I also run good again. It's really amazing how big variance can be as I made over 100 buyins within 100k hands during this period.
Before I always thought 100k hands was a big enough sample to be able to tell something about your winrate, but after the last half year I doubt it.
I've had a 200k hand stretche with a winrate of close to 0, but also one with a winrate around 10bb/100.So yeah variance is sick.

I'll post some hand later on.

Some hands

Here´s another update update with some interesting hands against a fairly aggressive opponent I played yesterday.

First hand against him. He was really getting out of line by now and 3betting around 15%-20% from the blinds I guess. I'm still not sure of I made the right decision here on the river, but he's river bet was fairly instant so my guess is, that he had me beat.

Third hand against him. He was really getting out of line with 3bets from the blinds by now (15%-20%). Not the best river, cause my thought on the turn was that het had complete air here, but this river could have helped him with some of his air hands, but his timing made me call this river.

In the fourth hand, my initial thought/read was good, but I should have changed that read when he instant raised the river. This guy had what u call a huge timing tell, because he always thought about bluffs and made valuebets/raises instant....
But I was stupid to stick with my plan and snapcalled his river raise.....big mistake.

Cruel game

It's been a while since I updated this blog. Yesterday after another unfortunate session I noticed that my latest blog update was about a huge upswing I had during the end of 2008.
Usually I'm not that superstitious, but by posting all those beats I gave away I probably triggered some sort of doomswith.
So hopefully this post will turn it around again :-)

As you can understand I'm going through a very though stretch of hands. During those 2,5 years I played poker I always had periods of weeks (50k-70K hands) where I run bad, just as I had periods where I run superhot.
The last 3,5 months though are the worst I ever had. I'm playing around break-even now for around 200K hands, which is far more then I ever thought was possible in the games I play.

People always ask the reason behind this long stretch. Is it the financial crisis that is affecting the poker games? Has my luck run out? Are other players adjusting better to my game? Am I playing worse? Or is it just bad luck.....

It's difficult to answer those questions because it's obviously very easy to blame it all to badluck, but it's probably a mix from a lot of things.
Games are tougher then a year ago thats for sure, but especially the last 6 weeks I had tons of very good tables and lots of fish.
One problem is that there are just less (good) games running above NL600 and so you see a lot of good players moving down in stakes.
It's not that players have become so much better, it's more that there are more of them in comparison with the bad players.

Offcourse when I'm running this bad for so long, I'm not always playing my best game anymore, but I think I'm doing quite ok here, at least not tilting buy-ins away, but just some not so good calls and some missed value bets, but nothing spectacular.
Where I had a period of like 30 winning days in a row at the end of 2008, I now haven't won more then 3 days in a row for like 4 months.

Even though I played so much hands already I still underestimated how big variance can be in poker, so I'm quite happy I always had a very strict bankroll management, because I don't have to worry about going broke or having to move down in stakes.

I'm not going to post any hands or graphs, because it speaks for itselfs.

All I want to say is, don't ever underestimate how bad u can run, because it can always get worse.

See ya at the tables!

Warning: do not read if you run bad

In one of my previous posts I said that I didn't give any bad beats away....well this has changed :-). Its ridiculous how hot I'm running the past 6 weeks.
After the last downswing of 60K hands I have the feeling that im now in an upswing for over 100K hands.
One of the sickest things is that during the last 27 days I played I didn't lose on one single day and in this 6 weeks period I had only 1 losing day...

I'm still playing 400/600 most of the time because it's very easy and low variance to 10-12 table those and I can get a pretty decent hourly there.
But I should definately play more 1000, because a lot of the time the tables there are not that tougher as you can see in the hand below....

Against the tablefish...

Maybe cards do have a memory...

November is almost over and it has been the month where I played the most hands ever (97K). During this period I had my biggest downswing and break-even swing ever. This downswing was about 23 buy-ins and the break-even swing lasted for almost 60K hands.
During my time as a pro I've had this periods (although a little bit shorter) more then once and it always ended with a huge upswing and it was the same this time, because I ended this month with my best week ever.

Suddenly al my draws seems to hit, flips are are coming my way and donks donate there money to me instead of me donating to them and then seeing some other reg going away with it. During this week I won more then 40 buy-ins, with 7 straight win days in a row all of them with more then 5 buyins...So in the end November ended quite good with a little more then 60 buyins profit. All in all my second best month ever.

A nice hand to show that there is still hope for people trying to move up...

Grinding....

Sorry for the lack of updates recently , but I've been playing a lot this month.
For november I had a goal to play around 80K-100K hands and so far I'm on track with already 65K hands. But the results are very disappointing so far.
I lost another $2500 pot (flush over flush) on NL400 last week against a terrible player (who managed to run $40 into $4000!! within 2,5 hours).

It's always easy to blame disappointing results to variance, offcourse some part is variance as I'm running way below EV and another funny thing I noticed is that I didn't give any bad beats (all-in with less then 35% equity for at least 75BB) for the past 28K hands...but I've also the feeling that I'm not playing my best game the past 100K hands. I just need to learn to fold more in spots where I just know I'm beat, if it was possible to see ones hand even when you folded it would save me (and a lot of other players) so much money.

Im back

It's been a while since I updated my blog and watching the comments, some people actually read it, so finally another update.
October has been a busy month, Ive been visiting a friend in Calgary and some maintenance to my house has been done. So not much poker this month.
For those who wondered about my september results, I did make a profit in september but it was not more then 10 buy-ins. October has been my 31st winning month in a row, but again results weren't really satisfying. They were a lot better then September, but I keep running (and playing sometimes) bad.

Today I was playing really good, but I still had the feeling the resulst could (and should) have been a lot better.

The 7 hands below were the only hands were I lost more then 90BB (in a 3K hands session) and I'm happy about 90% of my actions here, only the JJ call is probably not that good.

First hand is against a pretty bad player, who plays 32/17 and well not much I can do here....

Worst month ever

September has been terrible for me. Played a lot of hours (most of 2008), but unless I'll have a very good last day it will be my worst month since being a pro.
I don't like to whine about bad beats and running bad, because all players know it's a part of the game. So I just have to hope that October will threat me a little bit better.
I'll finish this update with the biggest pot I ever played on NL400. It was against a terrible player, who was running insane hot at this moment, but as usual managed to lose it all only to the other regs at the table....lucky me.

Bad start of the month

I've had a bad start of the month so far. Running pretty bad and losing with hands that used to be my moneymakers (KK, QQ, JJ, AK).
Had some troubles with my computer as well (could only play one screen) and I'm still waiting on delivery of my new computer.
When my new setup is ready with 3 monitors, I hope to be playing 10 tables again (instead of 6 right now).

It's strange how a bad run can get into your mind even though I've played over a million hands and should have enough confidence to know I'm a winning player for sure, still I'm doubting myself and my game during such a bad run.
It's probably a good thing, because during those times I'm always eager to play more and study my game again and again, but it shows how difficult it is to handle variance in poker and not let it influence your game.

But the games are definately getting thougher, so it gets more and more important to study your own (and other regs) game so you can stay one step ahead.
As mentioned in my earlier post, I tried to play a little bit on iPoker, but I'm quite sure that my hourly rate will be lower there (and with more variance).
Games are just packed full with regs and if I look at my datamined statistics, a winrate of about 2 - 3.5 seems reasonable there. On everest I'm still around 5 this year (300K+ hands).

I finish this post with a hand which I think I played fine, although I got it in with only 4.7% equity....
The guy in the blinds (who wakes-up with aces) was a complete donk on tilt, so I called the UTG raise hoping for a squeeze by him....eveything worked out as planned, only there hands were a little bit better then expected.

First impression of iPoker

As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm playing on iPoker this week mostly.
Just want to see if the rakeback/faster tables/more tables/better bonuses make up for the tougher games.
After 10K hands I can say for sure that the games are definately thougher, mostly because there are lot more multitabling regs and not so much complete donks.
On some tables the only 'fish' are the 30/10, 17/5 type of players.

So am still not sure on which site my $/hour will be the highest.
If I have to guess I think my winrate @ iPoker will be at least 2 ptbb lower then on Everest.
When playing on iPoker it helps alot to install iPokerbolide ($39) it let you change the tables and cards and that's really helpful.

I also bought 500K hands (NL400/NL600) on HHdealer.com (thanx for the tip in the comments) and this is really a very big advantage when playing on a new site.
Besides that I now already have huge samples of almost all my opponents it's also nice to do some analyzing on the winners/losers in the games....

Some interesting things I noticed:

* From the 10 players that play the most hands (20K+), 7 are losing over this sample.
* During a month on NL600 and 10 days of NL400, fishy players (get fish list in HM) donated $155K to the games, which is around $350 per fish.
* The average grinder (10K+ hands) plays a 20/16/3.4 game.

Some nice hands:

This hand was against a decent player, my image was pretty tight here so I didn't like 4betting here that much.

Back to the grinding

Holidays are over so it's time to play some hands again.
Haven't really played much the past 7 weeks, but I'm planning on playing a lot again starting tommorrow. Had some troubles with my computer, which was getting way too slow. Couldn't get 8 tabels open with a HUD. When I have my new computer I will try to play 8-10 tables again.
Really hope to play at least 75K hands until the end of September.

I'm also planning on playing some more hands on iPoker as I have a very nice deal over there, but I just hate the software. Hope that installing iPokerbolide will make it a better site to play on, so far it seems a lot better. Now I just have to see how the competition is over there.
It's always difficult to start on a new site, because the advantage to know every player on a site is so valuable.

So far August has been very unlucky. On NL400 I'm just above 0, but running 20 buy-ins below equity. Lucky for me I run a little bit above expectation on NL600+ (2 buy-ins), so still making an average profit of $0,40 per hand.

As I'm planning on playing more, I also hope to post some more hands here.
Just wish me luck.

Back from holiday

I just arrived back home from my holiday in Greece.
Had a very nice time with a lot of sun and relaxing.
Had time to read a lot of books and as I'm planning to start investing some money, I read some books about it.
One very nice and interesting book was Liar's poker (no it's not about poker...).
It's about a bond trader in London during the mid 80's. It's amazing to read how easy it was to make money in the bond market during that period.
It's really fun to read how much poker is like trading bonds/stocks, it's all about taking calcaluted risks, so no suprise I'm thinking about a future job in that area.
For the moment I will go back playing poker, but never know when the time is right to look for a 'real' job...

Not easy to start grinding again after days on places like this...
