Not much poker

Havent been playing much poker lately.
Taking some time off and enjoying holiday.
Only played around 15K hands in July, but still made a nice profit of close to $1 per hand. It's my 28th winning month in a row and I'm quite happy with it.
I playing some more HU and Omaha lately and I like it a lot as it is a lot less boring then 8-tabling 6max.
That's it for now, hope to have some more updates after my trip to Greece.

Half year reflection

2008 is half way so a nice time to do some reflections.
So far things are going really well. June was by far my best month ever and for 2008 I'm right on schedule with my winnings still between 40 en 50 cent per hand.

At the moment I'm still playing NL400 and NL600 most of the time and I probably will be doing this the coming period, because I'm quite sure that my hourly rate is slighty higher on NL400/600 then on NL1000 and with the lower variance added on NL400, I see no reason yet to play NL1000 only.

Some facts for this first half year:

Top10 most profitable hands (not really exciting...):

1. AA
2. KK
3. QQ
4. JJ
5. AKo
6. TT
7. AJs
8. KQs
9. 99
10. AQs

I also looked into my worst hands and the funny thing is that the worst hands are those which I never play (VPIP 0%), so this basically means I'm playing all my hands at least +EV at the moment (I would lose more if I would them all the time).

Most dealt PP: AA: 1435 times (1400 expected)....running hot
Less dealt PP: 88: 1323 times

To finish this update, here are the 2 biggest pots for June:

1988 - 2008.....

Not much poker this weekend, but euro2008 is great so far.
Against the Italians the Dutch team probably played their best game since at least 8 years (quarter final Euro2000 against Yugoslavia).
Winning with 7-1 againt the best 2 teams in the world is just amazing...still enjoying it....

Best month and week ever

Just a short update for now. Just finished a nice sunday night session to end my best week ever. Played a lot the past week (18K hands) and I won close to 1$ per hand.
As May was my best month ever, I expect June to be even better.
Games are really good lately and Im also playing better then ever. Also had some very sweet HU opponents, here are some examples of hands against them...

Things are still going well, on track for my best month ever, without playing that much (30K hands so far). From what I hear, people like to see some hands, so here they are, but first a very sexy graph of this month...and the fun thing is that I'm running exactly around expectation.

Some nice new gadgets

Finally an update again, but not too much poker this time, because the weather is just too good for poker. One of the advantages of being a pokerpro is that I can decide to take a day/week off when I wake up or whenever I want to. My only goal is basically to make around 100 hours a month or more like 1250 a year.

I also bought some nice new gadgets the last month. Finally bought a flat TV with a nice 2.1 surround set (I hate all those cables for normal sets) and finally a new phone (nokia N82). This Nokia really is a great phone. Especially the combination of GPS (with google maps) and a great internet browser is very useful when you're looking for nice restaurants for example.

Then a little bit of poker....only played 10K hands this month, but I'm up close to 1 cent per hand, so resulst so far are good. For 2008 I'm a little below schedule (My goal was around 0,40-0,50 cent per hand) with 225K hands for around 37 cents per hand.

Finally one tricky hand I played today. Not sure about my river call. Villian in this hand was about 21/15/3 over about 330 hands.

Finally an update again

I've been kind of lazy lately with my blog. But I got a lot of request to update it again. So here it is. Poker is still going good. After my downswing of about 65K hands I had my biggest upswing ever, winning about 1$ per hand for over 30K hands.

After a hand (bluff) that I happened against a pretty bad player (38/10/2) I was thinking about how easy it is to put people on hands (it's really not that difficult most of the time), but on the other hand how difficult it is to guess if they are able to fold a hand.
A lot of the time I see players who clearly seem to know that someone is weak, but the problem is that they overestimate (or need I say underestimate..) bad players. They seem to think that those players are actually thinking about what kind of hand you are repping, but in fact they just look at their own hand.
Kind of standard offcoure but against first-level thinkers its just not necessary to rep some kind of hand, cause they're not thinking about your hand.

So here are some hands which probably are good against second-level thinkers at least, but not against the players in the particular hands.

On this river I'm pretty sure he has KQ at best, but there's also a chance he has a missed draw here (flush/53/A3ss), so I overbet the pot here to rep AQ or better. But offcourse he calls with a hand that is nothing more then a bluff catcher. Bluffing calling stations is just not a very smart move....

The bluff in this hand below, probably is a little better. This player is a little better, although still not very good. When he calls the turn, I put him on AQ at best here. The river completes the backdoor flush, but misses mine, but I still decide to pull the last barrel.

Running extremely good again.

After running break-even for about 65K hands I'm finally back at my all time high.
The last week has been really good, with today being one of the best ever. I just won every single flip, and got paid off with big hands almost always. Won about 13 buy-ins in 3000 hands.

Here's my march graph:

I will post some hands later on.

vrijdag, maart 07, 2008

Poker sucks

The last 2 weeks have been really terrible. I just can't seem to win anymore. Played almost 18K hands in March alone and I'm still around break even. This break even stretch is now over a record of 50K hands....
Against one (new) player I managed to lose $2,4K in March alone....this guy managed to win 6 buy-ins of me (just normal 6max games) and I didn't win one single pot bigger then 20BB against him.
The funny thing is that he's pretty bad overall, but he's running so extremely hot against me that I will ship anyone who postst the sickest cooler or bad beat against him $25. I will decide which one deserves to won obvious, just post it in the comment.

Here are some of the big pots against him (alexsasha 22/14/4):

Cooler number 1 (we just ended HU, but it was 6max before):

Quick update

It's 2 weeks since my last update, so time for a new one.
Not much happened though, still on target for my goal of 40 to 50 cent per hand this year (I'm on 42 cent so far this year).

Want to post one hand, which I played perfect given my read.
Key in this hand is that I know he donks mediocre hands and no draws as far as I know, so I can 'safely' check behind on the turn (he is drawing to 5 outs most likely) en valuebet the river.

Best midstakes players on Everest

In the comments someone asked me the following question:

"Could you make a top 10 list over the most solid players fra N400-NL1000 at everest. Should include players that have been there for 4 months+
That could be super cool!"

As I like to make lists I'm gonna try to make a top5 of the players who I think are the most solid NL400/NL600 players (don't play NL1000 enough to rate those players).
When looking through my database of the last two months I noticed that there were only about 60 players with who I played more then 1000 hands....
And even with 1000 hands on somebody it's still very difficult to tell how good someone is. I also noticed that a lot of good players haven't been around the last two months as much as before.

So I'll select my top5 by the ~60 players I played the most the last two months.
So when you're not in the list it could mean two things...you're not good enough or you're avoiding me at the tables ;-)

1. Bigspender80 (24/21/6): Very tricky player, can mix his game very well and is not easy to read and very agressive. Haven't seen him for a while, but last month he seems to play more.

2. Sebboss (24/21/3): Good agressive player. Have seen him make some sick calls/plays, not easy to play against for sure.

3. cRaZyahm3D (20/17/6): Played the most hands by far against him the last two months. Maybe a bit too agressive, but definitely not nice to have him left of you.

4. Ze_Gnome (20/16/3): Plays a shitload of hands every month (100K+) and while he's not one of the best, he still is a lot better then most guys who play so much hands and he surely is one of the three biggest winners on NL400 ($$-wise).

5. Niwle (21/17/3): Another player with who've I played a lot of hands. Around for a very long time on NL400 and from what I've seen he's very decent and one of the very few players who I've never seen on tilt and thats a quality as well.

Kickstart

February is starting great. Only played for 5 hours but I'm up over 10 buy-ins.

Posting one kind of interesting hand. It's probably a very standard hand, but the key point is that raising the flop here is not the best option. By calling this flop I'm repping JT+, 99+ and he has a hand like 44-88 (+bluff) almost always here.
The turn is a good card, not because I hit a pair, but because the chance of him having 44 is very small and when he checks I'm obviously bluffing him off his 66 or something. But he knows I'm playing AJ+/QQ+ exactly the same.

Still running good

The past 10 days have been very good. I'm obviously running good but also playing and (important) table selecting good at the NL1000 tables.

I also had a nice discussion with Kaby (oo_kaby on Everest) on pokernews about my w$wsf percentage (which is around 42-43 usually). He pointed me on the fact that a w$wsf this low (he thinks 45+ is optimal) is a decent leak.
I'm aware of the fact that it could be higher with me and that I might miss a few +EV spots now and then, but I'm still not sure it's that easy to tell.
For instance, my Went to SD and Won $ At SD are pretty high (28 and 53 respectively).

Usually people with higher w$wsf percentages have lower Won at SD percentages (between 48-50). And one important thing that they might miss, is that pots at showdown are usually bigger then pots that don't go to showdown.
Offcourse it's very difficult to say what's optimal here, but having a w$wsf too high could mean that you don't give villian's the opportunity to bluff enough.

I would like to hear some other opinions (especially from Everest players NL400+) on this discussion. For those who missed the discussion....this is the link: http://nl.pokernews.com/poker-forum/topic46313/

Best weekend ever

After a terrible week, I decided to play some during the weekend, especially during the night. It worked out pretty well and if games are always like this I might do it more. Just finished my first session of the day and I probably had the sickest run of cards in a long time. I won about 8 buy-ins in less then an hour.
Got aces 5 times and always there was action, no bad beats (maybe one) and so on.
Anyhow it's nice to recover from my biggest downswing in just 3 days.

Below a nice overview of the difference between running bad (5 weekdays) and running good (last 3 days).

Worst week ever.

This week was by far my worst poker week ever, results wise.
I lost every single day, which is probaly also a record (losing 5 days in a row).
In total I lost 15 buy-ins (mostly on NL600). I also managed to lose money with QQ/KK/AA and AKs.....quite an accomplishment I would say.
The fun thing was that I lost most of my money to terrible players.

Hands like the one below are a good example. Villian is a terrible (but passive!!! player). I'm perfectly happy with how I played the hand, but I should fold to his river raise.

Stats freak

I'm probably a bit of a stats freak, but as a poker player thats probably a good thing. Once in a while I look into my PT database and try to look at all my stats over a big sample. Which hands are losing, how do specific hands do it from the blinds? By looking at this I can see if I'm overplaying some hands, or maybe opening to much hands.
My last database currently consist of 141K hands (almost 3 months). I think it's still not enough, but it gives some idea of hands that are winning/losing.

Some facts from this database:

Pocket pairs:
- Winning with all of them (AA 5,85 BB/hand)/KK/TT/QQ/JJ most profitable in that order)
- Most dealt (EV=~642 times) JJ -> 698 times
- Less dealt AA -> 565 times (as you can see there is still a huge difference here)

Suited connectors:
- Winning all playable hands 65s+ (AKs, KQs, JTs, 98s most profitable)
- Most dealt 54s(EV=~427 times) -> 441 times
- Less dealt KQs -> 398 times

Broadway hands not suited (JT+):
- Only losing with QTo (-0,01 BB hand), so not really losing, because it's better then nog playing the hand at all.
- Most profitable are AKo (1,22 BB/hand), AQo and AJo
- Most dealt (EV=~1298) KTo -> 1,373 times
- Less dealt KQo -> 1,251

Broadway hands suited:
- Losing with AJs (-0,08 BB/hand) and ATs (-0,11 BB/hand)
- Most profitable AKs (1,90 BB/hand), AQs and KJs
- Most dealt ATs -> 450 times
- Less dealt AQs -> 391 times

Suited aces:
- Losing with AJs,ATs and A7s (-0,18 BB/hand)

All hands:

When you look at how much you win/lose with hands it's not necesseraly bad when losing with a hand. Because when not playing the hand at all, you also lose a certain amount. For example 72o lost 0,15 BB per hand. So basically when I lose more then that I'm playing that hand unprofitabla for sure.

So which hands them I'm playing regularly (> 25% VPIP) are losing more then 0,15 BB/Hand....

K7s -0,16 BB/hand -> VPIP 25%
A7s -0,18 BB/hand -> VPIP 74%
J8s -0,18 BB/hand -> VPIP 35%
K8s -0,28 BB/hand -> VPIP 27%
86s -0,29 BB/hand -> VPIP 45%
J9s -0,38 BB/hand -> VPIP 57%
64s -0,39 BB/hand -> VPIP 35%
97s -0,48 BB/hand -> VPIP 69%

So as a conclusion I can say that I'm probably overplaying 97s (my favorite hand lol) and J9s a litte bit too much. But overall I'm pretty happy with those stats, as there are no real big losers.

This month:
Already played 20K hands which is good and I'm playing really well and I'm up almost $0,60 cent a hand and I'm aiming for $0,40 - $0,50 this year so running above expectation so far.

Ace high baby

Hands like the one showed below always feel nice, but especially when it's the very first hand at the table. So I didn't know the player and could only use my pattern mapper and timing tells (instant pot bet the river for example).
Offcourse this board texture is probably the best possible to make a call like this and as I have the Ace of hearts its very unlikely he has a bigger ace.

Thinking about your game

To improve as a poker player it's important to look critical your game from time to time.
It helps to read articles and watch video's from other players, who may have an other view on certain situations.
When playing as much as I do, I notice that I'm sometimes playing as a machine. The positive side of this is that I never tilt, but the downside is that I play some hands/situations the same too often.

A few days ago a read an article on 2+2 (could not find it back), but one thing in this article was about 'upfront' and 'backdoor' agression. It really opened my eyes a little, because a lot of the good players (including me) know how to use upfront agression (continuation betting, double barrel, triple barrel and so on), but using backdoor agression in a good way is a lot more difficult, but makes you so much tougher to play against.

Backdoor agression is about check-raising flops/turn/river when you are the pre-flop agressor. It's also about leading into the raiser (AKA donk betting). I think when your capable of balancing this agression into your game with strong/mediocre and (semi)- bluff hands it really makes you a bigger winner in most games and also a lot tougher to play against.

Triple barrel gone wrong

Finally I like to show a triple barrel that went wrong in a HU game against a pretty good player (his stats were 49/40/3 or something like that) and he views me as a good, but tight player (my HU stats are 38/34/3).

This hand made me think about 3-barreling ranges. On the river I'm about 100% sure that his best possible hand on this board is QT (AT would have been re-raised pre-flop and 2-pair+ would have bet the river/turn).
On the other hand he knows that the king on the turn is a perfect second barrel card for me and when I bet the river he probably knows I have 2pair+ or nothing here, because a lot of the time a hand like AK would check behind on turn or river.

I'm not sure if I like his call here so much, because I could be bluffing with better hands here, but it made me think of why it's so important to value bet thin against players like this. It not only makes you tougher to play, but it also makes your range a lot wider then just top2 or nothing when betting 3 streets.

Final 2007 update

First of all, sorry for the lack of updates recently, but I hope to compensate it with this somewhat longer then normal update.
I was kind of poker tired, so I just spend my poker time into effective playing hours.

2007
In 2007 I managed to put in 1314 poker hours, which is about 110 hours a month. I know it doesnt sound much (normal job here is about 168 hours a month), but I found out that it's not good for my game and health to play 8 hours every day.

So looking back at my goals in the beginning of the year I did not manage to play 1 million hands (my guess is around 750K hands), but I managed to reach my earned money goal with a very wide margin (goal was $120,000).

The best thing about this year was that my monthly income was very stable, better then I ever would have expected. All my months were $12K+ and my worst month was exactly half of my best month....so do some calculations and you know the 2007 results. I know people would like to see a year graph, but I have 5 PT databases so making one graph would cost me some photoshop time and it's probably a very boring (but nice) upwards sloping line.

2008

I would love to put some goals here for 2008, but I'll have to say that I'm not exactly sure what they will be. I don't know if I'm capable of putting another 100 hours a month of grinding NL400/NL600/NL1000. I'm now at a point were I could take the step from medium stakes to the higer stakes (NL1000+), but it's not just a small change in games. I should change my schedule for example, or play on different sites.
I know a lot of players get a kick from competing with the best and are action junkies, but I'm different in that.
Offcourse I like to play with good/better players some of the time, because it makes the game so much more interesting, but I'm not really an 'ego' player who always wants be the best and outplay others.

This was it for now, hope to update my blog more recently in the new year.
Finally I want to thank everybody for reading and wish everyone a happy new year.

Playing a flushdraw againt a donk.....
